Elena Giannoumis

What inspired your interest in public health?

My interest in public health stemmed from my compassion for others and curiosity in the way people live, work, and access healthcare in different communities. I wanted to better understand factors that influence health outcomes and how public health initiatives can improve the well-being of communities.

What public health issue or area are you most passionate about, and why?

The public health issue I am most passionate about is improving access to healthcare. Every individual deserves the opportunity to receive high quality care, yet many people face barriers such as cost, transportation, language differences, and limited availability of services. These challenges can prevent timely treatment and lead to poorer health outcomes. As a future physical therapist, I hope to address these disparities by providing patient-centered care, educating patients about their health, and advocating for greater access.

Briefly describe the TIPH Global project you are supporting and your role in it.

Temple University’s Public Health Beyond Borders (PHBB) program collaborates with universities and local communities in India, Peru, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic to empower communities through health education to reduce disparities. I was a part of the 2025 team that traveled to India and I currently provide guidance and support other teams traveling.

What do you hope your project will contribute to your institution, community, or the broader public health field?

I hope Public Health Beyond Borders makes a meaningful and lasting impact on the communities that Temple students serve while also inspiring students to continue pursuing their passion in public health. I also hope the program fosters cultural awareness, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of global health challenges.

What are your future study or career interests?

I am currently a student in Temple University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Although I am unsure of a specialty at this time, I hope to utilize what I have learned while participating in PHBB within my career as a physical therapist.
